U.S. goods and services trade with Canada totaled an estimated $673.9 billion in 2017. Exports were $341.2 billion; imports were $332.8 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade surplus with Canada was $8.4 billion in 2017. Picking up war with the long-time ally and neighbour is outright stupid by itself, more so over the negligible difference in imports and exports. Actually the U.S. goods and services trade surplus with Canada was $8.4 billion in 2017. It’s even more stupid to pick up the fight with the close allies when launching full-scale war with the major geopolitical opponent like China.
Canadians have every right to feel insulted and pissed off. The case of Canadian protectionism of the domestic dairy industry is overblown out proportion. The Canadian dairy market can’t withstand the onslaught of the US dairy exports based on vast economy of scale. Canada’s strive to protect its farmers and their way of life should be respected, not attacked.
