Two Putin’s statements on Russian Covid-19 vaccine Sputnik seem somewhat odd.
Firstly, Putin said that his daughter was among the first volunteers to get a shot of Sputnik. Why does Putin who is very reserved about his family mention his daughter? The answer is rather obvious – to promote and inspire confidence in untested Russian vaccine. Most probably Putin lied – the upper echelon of Kremlin power holders and their family members distrust Russian healthcare and have access to the best Westerns clinics and medicines.
Secondly, Putin, when asked in TV marathon whether he got vaccinated with Sputnik, mumbled something about his age and physicians being cautious about vaccine effect on his age group. Putin could simply lie that he got vaccinated with Sputnik, normally the ex-KGB lies as easily as breathes whenever it suits him. Putin promotes himself as a paragon of fitness, bare-chested horse-riding macho man stalking tigers in taiga, flying paragliders and going deep underwater to seek antique treasures. Why would a macho man in an apparent sign of weakness mention his age and potential vulnerability? That’s easy one. Putin does not want to encourage elderly population to get vaccination. Let them doubt and hopefully die, relieving the failed economy of necessity to pay pensions and bear medical costs of elderly population.
