The report that Russia provided satellite data to Yemen’s Houthi rebels, enabling them to target vessels in the Red Sea, represents a dangerous escalation in both regional and global security dynamics. Such actions reflect Moscow’s willingness to disrupt international maritime routes and directly aid non-state actors in launching sophisticated attacks. This not only threatens regional stability but also sets a precedent of leveraging strategic intelligence to fuel proxy wars far beyond Russia’s borders. If left unchecked, it could embolden other actors and further destabilize key trade corridors.
In this context, the West faces a critical decision: continued passive responses to Russia’s hybrid tactics will only incentivize further provocations. The appropriate countermeasure should be to strengthen Ukraine’s capabilities, including permitting long-range strikes deep into Russian territory. By doing so, the West can demonstrate a decisive stance against Moscow’s aggression, signaling that disruptive behavior will come at a high cost. Ukraine’s ability to target strategic Russian assets within its borders could impose pressure on Moscow, shifting the strategic balance and forcing Russia to reconsider its external engagements. As Russia escalates abroad, the West must empower Ukraine to strike back, not only for its sovereignty but as part of a broader strategy to deter Russia’s global adventurism.
